On December 7, 2025, Worcester witnessed an evening of profound cultural significance and compassionate purpose as AmudhaSri Dance School presented its Annual Bharatanatyam Winter Recital and Fundraiser at Doherty Memorial High School. Led by Smt. Kalaimangai Anbalagan, Founder, Artistic Director, and Choreographer, the event brought together distinguished dignitaries and community leaders, including Massachusetts State Auditor Diana DiZoglio, Worcester Mayor Joseph M. Petty, and Pratima and Ramakrishna Penumarthy, Co-Founders of Volunteering for Seniors (VFS).

The fundraiser was held in support of the M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation, a renowned mental health institution in India, represented at the event by Thiru Siva, whose presence highlighted the global humanitarian impact of the evening. What unfolded was far more than a recital—it was a luminous convergence of art, service, spirituality, and community unity.

At the center of it all stood Smt. Kalaimangai Anbalagan, whose unwavering commitment to preserving classical Bharatanatyam and nurturing young dancers has shaped AmudhaSri into a vibrant cultural institution. Her teaching goes beyond technique; she instills resilience, humility, spiritual grounding, and a deep understanding of nritya as a form of service. Under her guidance, students learn not just to perform, but to embody their art with integrity and devotion.

Throughout her career, she has championed working families, advocated for marginalized groups, and expanded access to public services—values that aligned powerfully with the evening’s purpose.

Joseph M. Petty, Mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts

The Mayor of Worcester—long a champion of education, youth programs, and cultural enrichment—addressed the audience with pride for a city that thrives on diversity and artistic expression. Known for expanding recreational and community services, supporting families, and investing in inclusive growth, the Mayor highlighted how the recital embodies Worcester’s character. He honored the dedication of the dancers, parents, and the school. In his reflections with Ascend Jiva Media, he shared:

Pratima & Ramakrishna Penumarthy, Co-Founders of Volunteering for Seniors (VFS)

As visionary leaders of the nonprofit Volunteering for Seniors, Pratima and Ramakrishna (Rama) Penumarthy bring decades of dedicated service to supporting elder well-being, reducing isolation, and fostering meaningful community connections. Through their work, they have created programs that empower seniors to stay active, engaged, and valued, while inspiring volunteers to embrace compassion and service. Their presence at the event added a profound sense of purpose and warmth, reflecting the very heart of their mission: to build a caring, connected community where every elder feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Representative Thiru Siva, M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation

Representing one of India’s most impactful mental health institutions, Thiru Siva of the M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation shared a deeply emotional reflection on the organization’s mission. The Foundation—widely respected for its work in psychiatric rehabilitation, special education, vocational training, and long-term care—has transformed thousands of lives over the past 30+ years.

Siva spoke about the critical need for awareness and support:

He explained that for many families, the Trust is the only place where children with mental disabilities receive consistent care, specialized education, structured therapy, and a chance at dignity and independence. He thanked the audience for contributing to this mission and emphasized how the school’s recital helps shine light on an issue often overlooked.

His words reminded the audience that compassion transcends borders, and that the evening’s efforts were reaching children and families thousands of miles away.

Smt. Kalaimangai Anbalagan, Artistic Director, Choreographer, and Founder of AmudhaSri Dance School

Smt. Kalaimangai Anbalagan is a celebrated Bharatanatyam artist, teacher, and choreographer with decades of experience in performance and pedagogy. Trained under renowned gurus, she leads AmudhaSri Dance School in New England, blending classical tradition with cultural awareness, discipline, and compassion. Under her guidance, students not only excel in artistry but also engage in community service and social impact, while her productions and performances continue to inspire and enrich the cultural community.

 

Her outstanding contributions to the arts were recognized this year through citations from Diana DiZoglio, Massachusetts State Auditor, and the Office of Governor Maura Healey. Her productions and performances continue to inspire and enrich the cultural community.

In her reflections with Ascend Jiva Media, Kalaimangai spoke about the sacred responsibility of guiding young dancers:

“This recital is a reflection of the heart and soul of AmudhaSri School of Dance. Our mission has always been to nurture not only skilled dancers but also compassionate, culturally aware individuals. On her personal journey as a guru and organizer, she remarked:

“For me, this event is a culmination of passion, dedication, and love—for dance, for my students, and for our community. Guiding these dancers through months of preparation is incredibly rewarding. Beyond learning choreography and technique, they grow emotionally, develop confidence, and gain an understanding of their cultural roots. Preparing for a fundraiser like this instills in them not just discipline and artistry, but also a deep sense of purpose and empathy.”

Finally, she offered a message of gratitude and blessings to parents, students, volunteers, and supporters:

“I am deeply grateful to all the students, parents, volunteers, and community members whose support makes this event possible. Your encouragement, dedication, and belief in our vision allow us to create meaningful experiences that transcend the stage. In 2025, the focus turned to supporting autistic children through the M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation.
