We are proud to spotlight Dr. Pratibha Shah, a trailblazing Ayurvedic physician, visionary leader, and relentless advocate for holistic wellness, takes center stage in our Stories on Purpose series at Ascend Jiva Media. Her work embodies the essence of Stories on Purpose—seamlessly blending vision, action, and meaningful impact, transforming ancient wisdom into life-changing solutions for individuals and communities.

Before moving to the U.S. in 2004, she served as Chief Medical Officer in India’s Ministry of AYUSH, leading with deep conviction in Ayurveda’s power to heal. After arriving in the U.S., she noticed clients struggling with preventable chronic conditions and holistic practitioners working in isolation—sparking a movement that has positively influenced communities for over a decade.

In 2013, she founded the Wholistic Health Alliance (WHA), a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to uniting practitioners, bridging gaps in healthcare, and empowering communities through preventive and integrative wellness. The “W” in WHA represents Wellness, We, Women, Wisdom, and World, reflecting her belief that health is both an individual and collective journey. Under her leadership, Dr. Pratibha’s work through WHA has connected hundreds of practitioners, launched youth-led initiatives like the Teen Mental Health Initiative and Fooditude, and built impactful collaborations across schools, health systems, and community organizations.

Dr. Pratibha’s work extends beyond clinical care—she is a mentor, changemaker, and cultural bridge-builder. Her contributions have been recognized at the White House, the WHO Global Center for Traditional Medicine, and international forums worldwide. She continues to inspire and educate, reshaping how holistic wellness is understood and practiced. Her story is one of resilience, purpose, and vision— a reminder that true health thrives when community, tradition, and innovation come together.

✨ Step into Pratibha’s story below — a journey of Ayurveda, activism, and the transformative power of collective wellness. Her work embodies the essence of Stories on Purpose, where vision, service, and leadership converge to transform communities and lives!

🌿 Q1: What inspired you to start Wholistic Health Alliance 10 years ago, and what was the vision you set out with in the very beginning?

With Ayurveda as both my profession and life’s mission, I have always been passionate about whole-person health and well-being. After moving to the United States in 2004, following my tenure as Chief Medical Officer in India’s AYUSH Ministry, I observed a growing disconnect between people and their health. Many clients faced chronic conditions that could have been prevented with awareness, education, and lifestyle changes. At the same time, talented holistic practitioners often worked in isolation, invisible to the wider community.

This inspired me to create Wholistic Health Alliance (WHA) in 2013—a platform to bridge these gaps. The “W” in Wholistic stands for Wellness, We, Women, Wisdom, and World, symbolizing both individual and collective well-being, the integration of traditional and modern approaches, and the importance of women and youth in shaping community health.

Key Drivers Behind the Founding of WHA:

  • Filling the Gap: Uniting fragmented holistic care.

  • A Community-Centered Vision: Guided by the belief that true health is more than the absence of disease—it is “life lived to its full potential with vitality and vibrancy.” WHA empowers individuals by:

    • Bringing holistic practitioners together under one supportive umbrella,

    • Creating synergy with communities, and

    • Offering accessible wellness tools for everyone.

  • Bridging Practitioner Collaboration & Public Accessibility: Recognizing the value of connected clinical care and public education, WHA was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to:

    • Support the practitioner community through interdisciplinary collaborations,

    • Provide a centralized directory of practitioners for easy consumer access, and

    • Offer free events, articles, and educational outreach programs to promote holistic wellness.

Q2: How do you define WHA’s mission, vision, and goals? And what are some of the key programs you currently offer to bring them to life?

WHA is more than an organization—it’s a movement empowering individuals, uniting diverse practitioners, and fostering youth leadership, driven by prevention, education, and collective action.

Our mission is to build a strong network of holistic health practitioners, deeply connected with communities, and to bridge complementary wellness approaches with mainstream healthcare—always keeping the consumer at the center.

Our vision is simple yet profound: to educate, engage, and empower communities to embrace holistic wellness and live healthier, more vibrant lives.

To achieve this, WHA focuses on five core goals:

  1. Build Healthy, Resilient Communities – Offer free, year-round educational events, articles, and resources focused on preventive wellness.

  2. Foster Collaboration Among Practitioners – Unite holistic practitioners under one umbrella through networking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge-sharing.

  3. Expand Reach via Practitioner Directory – Provide a robust directory to connect community members with holistic practitioners nationwide.

  4. Empower Youth Through Health Initiatives – Engage teens (13–19) through the Youth Brigade with peer-led discussions, leadership development, and service-based health advocacy.

  5. Influence Health Policy – Advocate for integrating complementary and alternative medicine into mainstream healthcare, strengthening client-centric, personalized care.

To bring this mission alive, our current programs include:

  • Practitioner Network & Engagement: A comprehensive practitioner directory, free educational events, and networking opportunities for collaboration.

  • Youth Brigade Projects: The Teen Mental Health Initiative and Fooditude, which empower youth to lead projects in mental health equity and healthy eating.

Membership & Community Opportunities: Affordable membership tiers offering visibility, mentorship, spotlights, and hands-on involvement. Youth memberships are free to encourage leadership and participation.

Q3. Looking back, what have been some of WHA’s most significant milestones, programs, or collaborations?

Over the past decade, WHA has achieved several impactful milestones that continue to shape holistic wellness:

  • Healthy Communities: Connecting holistic practitioners with the public through directories, free educational events, and resources.

  • Youth Brigade (2017): Engaging teens in health literacy, service, and leadership through initiatives like the Teen Mental Health Initiative and Fooditude.

  • Innovation in Engagement: Leveraging Zoom, YouTube, and social media to share wellness widely; youth maintain active channels with blogs, clips, and reels.

  • Strategic Expansion: Interdisciplinary practitioner collaboration, health fairs, panels, and art competitions expanding our reach.

  • Key Partnerships: Collaborations with Saheli, Asian Women for Health, Bedford Aging Council, American Holistic Nurses Association, Acton TV, and more.

  • Milestone Highlights:

    • 2013: WHA founded

    • 2017: Launch of Youth Brigade

    • 2020: Youth Brigade created the B-Well Wellness App during the pandemic

    • 2021: Launch of the Teen Mental Health Initiative

Q4: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in establishing and growing WHA, and how did you overcome them?

Like any nonprofit, WHA has faced challenges—from sustaining volunteer engagement to ensuring financial sustainability.

  • Volunteer Engagement: Youth and adults juggle many commitments, so we’ve built continuous mentorship and creative engagement strategies.

  • Funding: Grants and sponsorships are inconsistent, so we’ve diversified funding and built strong community partnerships.

  • Community Awareness: Preventive health is not always prioritized; we respond with culturally sensitive outreach and engaging programs.

  • Scaling with Quality: Growth requires maintaining consistency; structured leadership pipelines help us expand sustainably.

  • Digital Demands: Social media and apps require effort, but youth-led initiatives have turned these into opportunities for innovation.

  • Leadership Burnout: WHA’s success relies on the dedication of a few passionate leaders, but constant planning, outreach, and mentoring can lead to burnout. Expanding leadership and sharing responsibilities is essential, though challenging for a small nonprofit.

Q5: As WHA steps into its next decade, what is your vision for the organization? Are there any new initiatives, partnerships, or directions you are most excited about?

My vision is for WHA to grow as a vibrant hub for collaboration, empowerment, and community wellness. Exciting developments include our MOU with Volunteering for Seniors, a new partnership with the Mass Behavioral Health Helpline, and the potential launch of a WHA Chapter in the Virgin Islands.

These initiatives embody the essence of WHA—bridging holistic wisdom with modern needs, fostering youth leadership, and creating partnerships that make health accessible to all. The next decade holds immense promise for connection, healing, and positive change.

Q6: As the founder and leader, how has this journey shaped you personally and professionally, and what legacy do you hope WHA will leave behind?

Leading WHA has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life.

  • Personally, it has been humbling and inspiring to witness the power of collective intention and the growth of a vibrant community of practitioners, youth, and families.

  • Professionally, it has broadened my horizons beyond clinical and academic work in Ayurveda, teaching me leadership, collaboration, and how to meet people where they are—whether through traditional wisdom, evidence-based practices, or youth-led innovation.

The legacy I hope for WHA is threefold:

  • Empowerment: Giving individuals and communities tools to take charge of their health.

  • Integration: Showing that holistic and conventional systems complement one another.

  • Youth Leadership: Inspiring the next generation to embrace wellness as a lifestyle and carry forward service and innovation.

In essence, WHA’s journey has been one of co-creation, growth, and purpose. If even a fraction of our community embraces preventive, inclusive, and compassion-driven health, that would be a meaningful legacy.

Q7: What would you like to say to the practitioners, volunteers, supporters, and community members who have been part of this 10-year journey? And how can more people get involved?

Celebrating 10 years of WHA, my heart is filled with gratitude. What began as a vision has become a movement that has touched countless lives—connecting practitioners, empowering youth, supporting seniors, and building bridges across communities.

This milestone is not just about years; it’s about the incredible people who made it possible. Practitioners, thank you for sharing your healing. Volunteers, your dedication has been the lifeblood of every initiative. Supporters and community members, your trust and participation have given our work meaning and momentum.

Looking ahead, we invite more of you—students, professionals, families, and community leaders—to join us. Whether through volunteering, partnering, supporting programs, or spreading the word, every act strengthens our collective ability to create healthier, more connected communities.

Here’s to the next decade of growth, service, and transformation—together.

Ascend Jiva Media extends its warmest wishes to Dr. Pratibha Shah. Her journey with WHA is a true embodiment of the Stories on Purpose spirit — where vision, service, and leadership come together to transform communities and lives.
