Freedom is not preserved by memory alone.
It remains alive when a child watches the tricolor rise for the first time, when a young artist carries an ancient tradition onto a modern stage, when families gather across generations, and when a community transforms remembrance into participation.
Throughout August 2026, the India Association of Greater Boston, widely known as IAGB, will commemorate 79 completed years of India’s freedom through a month-long series of flag-raising ceremonies, cultural performances, sports, scholarships, civic engagement and community partnerships across Massachusetts.
Rather than limiting Independence Day to a single gathering, IAGB is carrying the celebration into several Greater Boston communities—creating opportunities for residents to honor India’s history while strengthening the cultural and civic relationships that connect India and the United States.
The celebrations began in Westford and Burlington, will reach their grandest expression at NARA Park in Acton on August 15, and will continue through Sharon and Andover.
Each gathering will carry its own atmosphere, but together they will tell one larger story: Indian heritage continues to grow, inspire and find new meaning in New England.
🌈 “Colors of India” Is More Than a Theme
The centerpiece of the celebrations will be IAGB India Day 2026, taking place on Saturday, August 15, from 2:30 PM to 7:30 PM at NARA Park Amphitheater in Acton.
This year’s theme, “Colors of India—Stories That Inspire,” represents far more than the visual beauty associated with India’s festivals, clothing, landscapes and traditions.
The colors of India also live within its people.
They are found within stories of courage and migration, resilience and sacrifice, creativity and faith. They are carried through family histories, artistic traditions and the lived experiences of those building new lives far from their ancestral homeland.
India cannot be represented by one region, language, dance form or community.
Its strength has always emerged from its extraordinary diversity.
By bringing many cultural expressions into one shared space, India Day will celebrate the idea that India’s differences do not weaken its identity. They create it.
🎭 More Than 20 Performances Will Bring Heritage to Life
More than 20 cultural performances by local artists and dance academies will transform NARA Park Amphitheater into a vibrant stage of movement, rhythm and storytelling.
Audiences can expect performances inspired by classical, folk, regional and contemporary traditions.
Behind every presentation will be months of preparation by dancers, musicians, teachers, choreographers, parents and volunteers.
For many young artists, performing at India Day will carry a significance greater than public recognition.
It will be a moment when discipline meets identity.
A dance learned within a studio will become part of a wider cultural narrative. A tradition passed down through generations will find a new voice on an American stage.
These performances will demonstrate that heritage is not something preserved by keeping it unchanged. It remains alive when every generation learns it, interprets it and shares it with confidence.
💃 The Audience Will Become Part of the Experience
India Day will not ask visitors to remain passive spectators.
An interactive Flash Mob and Dance Along led by Swasti Bhargava will invite children, parents, grandparents and community members to step forward and participate.
The experience will remove the traditional boundary between the stage and the audience.
No formal dance training will be required—only a willingness to join the moment.
Culture is strongest when it belongs not only to performers and institutions, but to everyone willing to experience and support it.
As the celebration moves toward its conclusion, Xtreme Productions will present a high-energy Grand Finale DJ Hour, bringing performers, volunteers, families and visitors together through music.
The finale will offer a joyful ending to a day shaped by history, art, youth, community and shared pride.
🏏 India Day Will Begin on the Cricket Field
Long before the cultural performances begin, another beloved expression of Indian life will take center stage.
From 7:00 AM to 12:00 noon on August 15, IAGB will host its first-ever Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament at NARA Park and Macpherson Field in Acton.
Cricket carries a unique emotional connection for millions of Indians.
It is played within international stadiums, neighborhood parks, school grounds and improvised spaces where a bat, a ball and a few friends are enough to begin a match.
For many members of the Indian diaspora, cricket brings back memories of childhood, friendship, family and home.
By introducing the sport as part of its Independence Day celebration, IAGB is broadening the meaning of cultural preservation.
Heritage is not expressed only through formal ceremonies or performing arts. It also lives through games, shared passions and experiences that cross languages, regions and generations.

At 3:00 PM, the Indian tricolor will rise at NARA Park.
Within a day filled with music, performances and activity, the official flag-raising ceremony will offer a moment of reflection.
For those who grew up in India, it may awaken memories of school assemblies, patriotic songs and streets decorated with saffron, white and green.
For children growing up in Massachusetts, the ceremony will carry another important message.
It will show them that Indian heritage and American belonging do not need to stand apart. Both can become sources of pride, responsibility and civic participation.
The flag will honor the sacrifices that gave India its freedom while reminding the community that freedom must be carried forward through dignity, education, service and respect for diversity.

🎓 Scholarships Give Young Voices a Place of Honor
The IAGB Senior Scholarship Awards 2026 will ensure that young people are not merely present at the celebration, but recognized as an essential part of its future.
Supported by The Kapasi Family Foundation, IAGB will present two scholarships of $500 each to graduating high school seniors entering college during fall 2026.
One male student and one female student will receive the awards.
Applicants submitted essays inspired by the theme:

The theme invited students to explore India through their own experiences and perspectives.
Their essays may reflect family journeys, cultural traditions, personal role models, historic leaders, artists, reformers or the complex experience of growing up between cultures.
By recognizing the scholarship recipients publicly during India Day, IAGB is affirming that the next generation’s interpretation of heritage matters.
Preserving culture does not mean asking young people to repeat the past exactly as it was.
It means giving them the knowledge and confidence to understand it, question it and carry its most meaningful values forward through their own lives.

Admission and parking will be free, making the celebration accessible to families and visitors from throughout New England.

📍 August 16: The Tricolor Rises in Sharon
The celebration will continue on Sunday, August 16, at the Sharon Community Center.
Time: 5:00 PM–7:00 PM
The Sharon gathering will bring families, residents and community leaders together for another public expression of Indian heritage and civic partnership.
By organizing ceremonies throughout several towns, IAGB is ensuring that Independence Day reaches communities where Indian American families live, work, study and contribute.
These public events also invite neighbors from different backgrounds to participate, learn and experience Indian traditions within an open and welcoming setting.
🕉️ August 22: A Meaningful Conclusion in Andover
The final scheduled flag-raising ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 22, at Chinmaya Mission Boston in Andover.
Time: 4:00 PM–4:30 PM
The Andover ceremony will bring IAGB’s August observance to a meaningful conclusion.
From town commons and athletic fields to community centers and cultural institutions, each location adds a distinctive voice to the wider celebration.
Together, the events demonstrate that Indian heritage has become deeply woven into the cultural landscape of Greater Boston.

Founded in 1962, the India Association of Greater Boston is one of New England’s oldest and most established Indian American nonprofit organizations.
For more than six decades, IAGB has promoted Indian culture, encouraged civic and community participation and strengthened connections between India and the United States.
Its India Day and Republic Day celebrations have become important New England traditions, supported by educational initiatives, youth programs, cultural activities and community partnerships throughout the year.
