The word Neelkanth means “the one with the blue throat,” referring to Shiva’s legendary act during Samudra Manthan, the cosmic churning of the ocean.
When the deadly poison halahala threatened creation, Shiva chose sacrifice over self-preservation. He consumed the poison and contained it within himself, protecting others from destruction.
